Sport & Outdoor Education

Within the curriculum, all children receive two hours of PE per week. We have specialist sports coaches working in the school, including Mr Thompson who works with the school every Thursday afternoon and various coaches from the Allerdale Sports Partnership.  The school participates in a large number of local events as well as running a number of sports clubs each term. The school takes pupils on residential visits, you can find out more about these on our Residentials page. This is supplemented by non residential visits and activities, some of which are 'one off' (e.g. orienteering at Whinlatter) whilst others are part of a series of sessions (e.g. Year 5 & 6 had the opportunity to take part in a series of climbing activities as well as a ghyll scramble and fell walk during the summer term 2017, whereas in 2016 there were weekly sailing sessions at Derwentwater Marina for 5 sessions during the summer term).

We are lucky to have extensive playing fields within the school grounds as well as immediate access to the local fells, valleys, woods and rivers. The school uses the Holiday Property Bond’s pool for swimming each week. This enables every child to have regular access to swimming tuition from a qualified teacher from Reception.

During the summer term pupils benefit from rugby coaching from Alan Gray. Towards the end of the term we have a school rugby afternoon when every class - and the teachers - play in 'exhibition matches' for the mums and dads to watch.  It is amazing to see the skills develop throughout the school.
